Northern Ireland Shetland Pony Group Show
September 2007
Knockagh View Equestrian Centre

Editorial
The Northern Ireland Shetland Group Show was held at Knockagh View Equestrian Centre in early September. The Show is affiliated to the Shetland Pony Stud Book and as such all classes are judged by a Society panel judge. In 2007 the Group were delighted to welcome Debbie Barr, panel judge and well known producer of top class HOYS and Olympia competition ponies.

The Shetland showcase is seen by many members as the highlight of the Shetland showing calendar and underpins many awards schemes administered by the Group. The organising committee was delighted with the number of entries forward. Members and spectators enjoyed the excellent facilities made available by Knockagh View Equestrian Centre and together with the exceptional September weather ensured the Show’s recipe for success.

In Hand Classes
It was refreshing to see several new ponies and partnerships making their show ring debut. Congratulations are extended to Cumberland family with Gola Prospero and Alan Sloane with his new miniature yearling filly, Halstock Lances Vienna

Taking top honours in the junior championship was Glenlough Studs 2 year old filly, Glenlough Perception, by Hose Exactly who died suddenly at the beginning of the 2007 season. Exactly was no stranger to top awards and it was a fitting tribute that his offspring are now following in his footsteps. Standing in Reserve and taking the coveted SPSBS Best Foal was one of the youngest exhibits in the junior classes Beltoy Cilver Cloud.

Helen Coxan from Co Cavan had a very worthwhile trip with her 3 year old filly, Carajane Dancer securing the Best Miniature award.

In the popular and well filled gelding classes the Best Gelding awards went to Catherine Lyttles, black driving pony, Magnum of Mawbray and in the Coloured section Beltoy Regal owned by Miles & Pam Harris.

The Newcomers class saw mother and daughter team Rachel and Mandy Jones take the top placings, with Rachel securing the silverware with Magheradartin Studs, Magnum of Mawbray.

Ridden
The Stud Book Society Best Lead Rein award went to Toreagh Stud’s Dryknowl Col partnered by Lauren Finn and led by Margaret Letters. The partnership has had an exceptional 2007 season, taking the coveted Red rosette in Shetland Lead Rein classes at all Northern Ireland shows. The partnership’s success has been further complimented by many top wins in Mountain & Moorland lead rein classes and championships.

On the open ridden front it was the seasoned partnership of Barns Isabel produced by Debbie Irwin from the Woodhill Show Team and ridden by Sarah Curry who retained their winning form and were awarded the SPSBS Best Ridden rosette for the 3rd year in succession.

Driving
Taking up the reins in the driving class and securing the top place rosette was Pam Harris driving her 11 year old chestnut gelding, Beltoy Royalist. This driving combination had a super season at several BDS events were they enjoyed commendable results. In second place was Deborah Lyttle of Magheradartin Stud driving her stallion, Longlane Ranger.

Young handler Classes
Junior handlers were well catered for and they welcomed the opportunity of taking over from the adults and competently demonstrated just how polished they are in the show ring. Top honours and SPSBS Best Young Handler in the junior age group, was Lauren Finn with the senior title going to Sarah Curry.

Supreme Championship
The Overall Supreme of Show went to Beltoy Stud’s yeld mare, Beltoy Stelrose, although lightly campaigned in 2007 the mare has enjoyed immense success taking 3 Championships from her 4 outings.  The junior champion, Glenlough Perception added the Reserve Supreme title to her successful show.

The organising committee would like to extend thanks to everyone who supported the Show; in particular Ruth Wilson of Knockagh View Equestrian Centre, judge Mrs Debbie Barr, chief steward Connor McCormick and the Show’s many sponsors.
